How to Find Your Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

The Look

This is the 1960 Space Age in a bottle. It's cool, industrial, and clean. Buick put it on everything that year-the massive Electra 225, the Invicta, and the LeSabre. It lives for chrome. If your car has those huge 1960 bumpers, this color makes them pop. It isn't just gray. It has a shimmer that feels heavy and expensive.

Technical Details

This is a metallic finish. Back then, they called it "Poly." The silver flakes are tiny but temperamental. They love to sink to the bottom of the container. If they aren't mixed, your repair will look like flat primer instead of a shimmer. Metallics also carry a mottling risk. If you apply it too heavy in one spot, the silver flakes will bunch up and create dark shadows. It takes patience.

Best Practices

Find your data plate riveted to the left side of the cowl under the hood. Before you spray or dab Buick Silver Mist Poly (check for code DD (1960)), you need to shake it for 60 seconds. Hard. Test the color on the included card first to see how the flakes lay down. When you start, keep the container moving. Work in thin, light passes. If you go too thick, the silver will look muddy. Give it plenty of drying time between layers. Work in the garage or a nice patch of shade.

Will absolutely order from this company again.

After ordering touch-up paint from Lexus I was still waiting for it a month later. If they'd told me upfront it would take that long I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Reason I chose this product: Spouse sideswiped passenger side of car while backing out of garage. Mostly plastic transfer from his wheel well trim but pressure creased and cracked the paint causing a bare strip 1/8 wide x 4” long below door handle. Scratches on door handle and a few small chips on both doors.

Simply the best custom mixed paint in spray cans

Used Paint Scratch metallic custom mixed spray cans paint on a hood panel with excellent coverage and texture over the surface. Metallic paint can be very unforgiving out of a spray can, sputtering pigmentation dots on the panel being sprayed and thus ruining the paint job. No such issues with Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint spray cans. Paint sprayed strong and evenly till the last drop of paint in the can. Shipping time was faster than expected. Reason I chose this business: Having tried other brands of custom mixed metallic paint with terrible results, sputtering pigmentation tint dots from the spray nozzle in spite of vigorously shaking of can prior to application and loss of propellant rendering the lower fifth of the can's paint useless, Paint Scratch custom mixed metallic paint sprays out beautifully and strong all the way to the last gram of paint in the can.
