The Look

You are likely staring at a fresh scuff on your Model 3, Model S, Model X, or Model Y wheels. This deep, smoky charcoal is the signature finish for Tesla's performance-leaning wheel sets, though it has found its way onto other trim pieces in the 2024 lineup. It is a moodier, more technical grey than the standard silver, designed to hide brake dust while maintaining a sharp, aggressive profile. Because it sits so low on the car, it takes a beating from road salt and debris, which can eventually dull the factory luster if you do not keep up with small repairs.

Technical Details

This is a heavy metallic finish, which means it carries a high concentration of tiny aluminum flakes. These flakes are the reason the color looks so rich, but they are also your biggest challenge. In a stationary container, the metal particles sink to the bottom almost immediately. If you apply the paint without proper mixing, you will end up with a flat, dark grey that lacks any of the original sparkle. Furthermore, metallics are sensitive to how they are applied; if the paint goes on too thick in one spot, the metal bits will "mottle" or cluster, creating a dark blotch that ruins the factory look.

Best Practices

Before you spray or dab Tesla Sonic Carbon (check for code 06E), you need to shake the container for a full two minutes to get those metallic flakes suspended. You can find your paint code on the manufacturing label located on the driver-side door jamb. Always test the color on the included card first to ensure the flake density looks right. Work in your garage or a patch of shade to keep the surface cool. When applying, keep the container moving to ensure an even distribution of the metallic particles. If you are using a pen or brush, apply thin layers and allow plenty of drying time between them.
