How to Find Your 1970 AMC's Color Code

AMC paint codes are hidden on top of the radiator support; engine grease and oil often make them impossible to read. Typical format is BS/GBS; only the BS portion is the color code. It can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc. The first letter is the Year Code, which makes color codes confusing. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately AMC lists codes as BS. AMC has many two tone combos on some cars and often omitted the secondary color information.

1970 AMC Background Info

The 1970 AMC Vibe

In 1970, the boys in Kenosha decided to stop playing polite and started throwing punches. This was the year of the Javelin and the AMX hitting their stride, and AMC wasn't about to let Mopar have all the fun with the "high-impact" craze. We've got 21 colors from this legendary year in our database, and let me tell you, it's a spectrum of beautiful madness. You've got the neon-adjacent "Big Bad" trio-Big Bad Blue, Green, and Orange-designed to be seen from a low-orbit satellite. But it wasn't all loud; you had the classier, metallic "Poly" tones like Commodore Blue Poly and Golden Lime Poly that gave the Rebel and the Hornet a bit of sophisticated shimmer. It was a time when a car could be a sophisticated cruiser or a street-legal middle finger, depending on which box you checked.

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at original paint on a 1970 survivor, you're looking at the peak of the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't have a clear coat safety net to hide behind. The pigment and the gloss were mixed into one thick, solvent-heavy layer. The bad news? Oxidation is your mortal enemy. Without a clear layer to take the UV beating, the sun literally "cooks" the top layer of the pigment, turning that deep Villa Red Poly into a chalky, pinkish haze. If your AMC looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's just dead paint sitting on top of the good stuff. It's not "peeling" like a modern car; it's just slowly turning back into dust.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage enamel, you have a unique advantage: you can often buff the "life" back into it. But listen close-if you're working with a "Poly" (metallic) color like Sonic Silver Poly or Bayshore Blue, be gentle. Those metallic flakes are suspended right in the color coat. If you get too aggressive with a heavy cutting compound, you'll "mottle" the flakes or sand them flat, leaving you with a dull, greyish patch that no amount of wishing will fix. My advice? Once you've leveled the surface and got that Big Bad Orange screaming again, it needs wax or it dies. Without a high-quality wax or sealant, that single-stage finish has zero defense against the elements. Seal it up, or the sun will start eating your hard work before the next car show.
