How to Find Your 1984 AMC's Color Code

AMC paint codes are hidden on top of the radiator support; engine grease and oil often make them impossible to read. Typical format is BS/GBS; only the BS portion is the color code. It can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc. The first letter is the Year Code, which makes color codes confusing. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately AMC lists codes as BS. AMC has many two tone combos on some cars and often omitted the secondary color information.

1984 AMC Background Info

The 1984 AMC Vibe

In 1984, AMC was doing its best to stay in the game by reinventing the station wagon. The AMC Eagle was effectively the world's first crossover-a rugged 4WD beast that looked like it was headed to a board meeting but could actually survive a mud bog. The color palette that year was a glorious hangover of 1970s earth tones crashing head-first into 80s neon dreams. We're talking about a lineup of 12 distinct shades, ranging from the business-casual Almond Beige and Mocha Dark Brown Metallic to the "look-at-me" Sebring Red. If you're rocking Garnet Metallic or Topaz Gold, you aren't just driving a car; you're driving a four-wheeled time capsule of American eccentricity.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your AMC's finish is likely fighting a losing battle with the sun. Back in '84, they weren't burying the color under layers of protective clear coat; the pigment and the shine were one and the same. The "Legend" might be mechanically bulletproof, but the paint is prone to heavy oxidation. If your Slate Blue Metallic or Autumn Brown looks like a dry chalkboard, that's the paint literally "chalking" as the binders break down. This era of AMC paint wasn't exactly known for its longevity, and if it spent a decade sitting out in the driveway, the finish is probably thirstier than a 258 straight-six.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up these old-school single-stage enamels, remember the Golden Rule: It needs wax or it dies. Before you apply any new paint to a chip, you have to buff away that "dead" oxidized layer to find the true color underneath. If you try to match your new paint to the chalky surface, you'll end up with a spotted mess once you finally polish the car. Once the repair is done and the finish is level, keep a thick coat of high-quality wax on it at all times. Without that sacrificial layer of wax, the UV rays will turn your deep Deep Night Blue back into a dull, flat grey faster than you can find a replacement part for an Eagle's transfer case.
