How to Find Your AMC All Models's Color Code

AMC paint codes are hidden on top of the radiator support; engine grease and oil often make them impossible to read. Typical format is BS/GBS; only the BS portion is the color code. It can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS, etc. The first letter is the Year Code, which makes color codes confusing. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately AMC lists codes as BS. AMC has many two tone combos on some cars and often omitted the secondary color information.

The Color Breakdown

AMC really didn't hold back when it came to the showroom floor. We have recorded 66 colors for these models, and honestly, they really went for it. Whether you're rocking the loud and proud Big Bad Orange, the psychedelic Wild Plum, or the surprisingly elegant Algiers Rose Copper Poly, these cars were designed to be noticed. With 66 shades on the menu, AMC proved that "economy" didn't have to mean "boring."

What to Watch For

Finding your paint code on an AMC can be a bit of a scavenger hunt. Most of the time, you'll find it on a metal tag in the driver's side door jamb, but AMC was famous for occasionally hiding them on the radiator support under the hood. If you're looking near the engine, bring a rag-these codes are often buried under decades of road grime and engine oil.

In terms of the finish, keep an eye on those "Poly" (metallic) colors. Over time, the sun loves to bake the horizontal surfaces like the hood and roof, leading to a "chalky" look or even sections where the top layer begins to flake off. If you see a small chip, catch it early before the edges start to lift.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many AMC colors are "Poly" (which is just vintage-speak for Metallic), your biggest hurdle is the flake. Those tiny sparkles are heavy and love to settle at the bottom of your touch-up bottle. Shake your paint for at least two full minutes-longer than you think you need to. If you don't "wake up" the metallics, your touch-up will look darker than the rest of the car. When applying, use the "dab, don't brush" method. A few thin dabs will keep the sparkles sitting pretty rather than clumping together in a dark blob.
