How to Find Your 1972 Alfa-Romeo's Color Code

The Alfa-Romeo paint color code can be found on the trunk lid, inside the spare tire compartment, or in the rear storage area. If not found, Alfa-Romeo can be contacted to determine the color code. If there is no color code, the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number can be requested.

1972 Alfa-Romeo Background Info

The 1972 Alfa-Romeo Vibe

Welcome to 1972, the year the GTV 2000 and the Spider Veloce were busy teaching the world that "style" wasn't just a word, it was a requirement. This was a peak era for the brand-the Montreal was turning heads and the Giulia was still the coolest sedan on the Autostrada. We've managed to capture the essence of this year with 9 essential colors, from the eye-searing Canary Yellow and Signal Red to the more "gentleman racer" tones of English Racing Green and Burgundy. If you're looking at a Champagne Metallic GTV, you're looking at pure Italian class, assuming the sun hasn't cooked it into a matte finish by now.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in the Single Stage Era, my friend. Back then, they mixed the pigment and the gloss into one thick soup and sprayed it straight onto the metal. It looks deep and soulful when it's fresh, BUT this paint is a living thing. Without a modern clear coat to hide behind, colors like Alfa Red and China White are prone to "Oxidation." If your Alfa looks like it's covered in a layer of white chalkboard dust, that's the paint literally giving up its life for you. The pigment is dying on the surface, turning that vibrant red into a sad, chalky pink.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "resurrect" it-to a point. If you've got heavy oxidation on your Gray Metallic or Chalk White panels, you need to carefully buff away that dead top layer of paint to reveal the fresh color underneath. But listen close: it needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished it, you've exposed "raw" pigment to the elements. Without a high-quality carnauba wax or sealant to act as a sacrificial barrier, the sun will turn your hard work back into chalk in six months. Treat your wax like your oil changes-do it often, or watch the finish vanish.
