How to Find Your 1979 Alfa-Romeo's Color Code

The Alfa-Romeo paint color code can be found on the trunk lid, inside the spare tire compartment, or in the rear storage area. If not found, Alfa-Romeo can be contacted to determine the color code. If there is no color code, the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number can be requested.

1979 Alfa-Romeo Background Info

The 1979 Alfa-Romeo Vibe

Welcome to 1979-the year the disco ball started to dim, but the Italian sports car scene was still burning bright. Whether you were piloting a Spider Veloce with the top down or an Alfetta through a mountain pass, you were making a statement. We've got 11 colors in the vault for this year, and it's a beautiful mix of "I'm here to race" and "I'm here for the fondue party." You've got the classics like Alfa Red and Signal Red, but 1979 was also the peak of those earthy, soulful tones. Chocolate Brown and Straw are pure '70s gold, while English Racing Green and Navy Blue kept things sophisticated for the gentlemen drivers.

Paint Health Check

Back in '79, the factory wasn't messing around with "layers" of clear protection; this is the Single Stage Era. What you're looking at is a single, thick layer of pigmented glory. But here's the rub: without a clear coat to take the hit, the sun is your absolute worst enemy. If your Ruby Red Metallic looks more like a dusty pink or your Black has a chalky, white film over it, you're looking at heavy Oxidation. The paint is literally dying on the surface. These Alfas were famous for "returning to the earth" via rust if you looked at them funny, but the paint itself will turn into a chalkboard if it's left out in the elements.

Restoration Tip

The good news about single-stage paint? It's "living" paint. You can actually bring it back from the dead. If your finish is looking dull and chalky, don't just start scrubbing with a heavy compound like you're sanding a deck. Start with a fine polish or a chemical paint cleaner to remove that top "dead" layer of oxidation. You'll see the color transfer onto your pad-don't panic, that's supposed to happen. Once you've uncovered the fresh pigment underneath, hear me now: it needs wax or it dies. Without a high-quality sealant or wax, that fresh surface will oxidize again before you can finish your espresso. Keep it fed, keep it covered, and keep it out of the rain.
