How to Find Your 1984 Alfa-Romeo's Color Code

The Alfa-Romeo paint color code can be found on the trunk lid, inside the spare tire compartment, or in the rear storage area. If not found, Alfa-Romeo can be contacted to determine the color code. If there is no color code, the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number can be requested.

1984 Alfa-Romeo Background Info

The 1984 Alfa-Romeo Vibe

Welcome to 1984, an era where the GTV6 sang like an opera singer and the Spider Veloce made everyone feel like they were cruising the Amalfi Coast, even if they were just stuck in traffic in New Jersey. At a time when the rest of the automotive world was getting boring and beige, Alfa-Romeo brought a massive palette of 13 colors to the table. We're talking about everything from the legendary Alfa Red to the more "acquired tastes" like Straw, Ivory, and the curiously named Freen. It was a time of high-revving Italian passion and even higher-maintenance chemistry.

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at an original 1984 finish, you're dealing with the height of the Single Stage Era. Unlike modern cars that hide behind a plastic-like clear coat, these Alfas wore their pigment right on the surface. But here's the rub: that pigment is fighting for its life against the sun. Without a clear shield, colors like Navajo Red and Signal Red are notorious for "chalking"-a nasty oxidation process that turns a deep Italian scarlet into a dusty, pale pink that looks more like a stick of bubblegum than a sports car.

Restoration Tip

Since this is a single-stage finish, your paint actually has "pores." It breathes, and if you don't seal it, it dies. If your Grigio Chiaro Metallic or Black Metallic is looking a bit thirsty, you need to feed it. Before you even think about a heavy compound, use a high-quality polish to pull that dead, oxidized layer off and reveal the fresh pigment underneath. Once you've found the color again, it needs wax or it dies. Apply a heavy carnauba seal immediately to lock out the oxygen. If you leave it "naked" for even a month, that chalky fade will be back before you can finish your espresso.
