How to Find Your 1958 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1958 Audi Background Info

The 1958 Audi Vibe

Welcome to the year of the "Economic Miracle," where the four rings were still shaking off the post-war dust and learning to party. In 1958, if you weren't driving an Auto Union 1000 or its flashy, finned cousin, the 1000 SP, you weren't really trying. The palette was a delicious mix of optimism and German precision. We've got 14 survivors in our database, ranging from the sophisticated Aero Silver to the "just-vibrant-enough" Amazon Green. Back then, choosing between Cardinal Red and Garnet Red was the biggest stress a driver had, besides figuring out where to put the two-stroke oil.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era, my friend. This means the color and the protection were mixed in the same pot-there's no clear coat "shield" standing between your Dolphine Blue and the sun. If your '58 looks more like a chalkboard than a luxury car, you're looking at classic Oxidation. The paint is literally dying of thirst. Without a steady diet of high-quality wax, these old-school finishes turn chalky and porous. It's a "bulletproof" thick finish in terms of durability, but it's high-maintenance; ignore it for a decade, and you'll be buffing off more color than you leave on the metal.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage territory, remember: the paint is live. When you're touching up a chip in Graphite Silver Metallic or Mignonette Gray, don't expect a "set it and forget it" modern experience. These solvent-based formulas need to be leveled carefully. My advice? It needs wax or it dies. Once your touch-up is cured, keep that panel sealed. If you're buffing out old oxidation, go slow-you're physically removing a micro-layer of the car's history with every pass. Use a dedicated polish for older enamels to bring back the shine without stripping the car down to its birthday suit.
