How to Find Your 1970 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1970 Audi Background Info

The 1970 Audi Vibe

In 1970, Audi was busy proving that German luxury didn't have to be stuffy, rolling out the 100 LS and the Super 90 with a confidence that practically dripped off the fenders. It was a peak "transition" year for style-we were moving away from the polite, Easter-egg pastels of the 1960s and diving headfirst into the bold, psychedelic, and occasionally questionable earth tones of the Seventies. With 22 colors in our database for this year, Audi clearly wasn't shy. You had high-voltage hitters like Tibetian Orange and Canary Yellow for the guys who wanted to be seen from space, and sophisticated, "velvet-lounge" hues like Chinchilla, Savanna Beige, and Elm Green for the diplomat in a hurry.

Paint Health Check

If you're working on an original 1970 survivor, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. This was back when we mixed the pigment and the protection into one thick, honest soup. There is no clear coat on top to save you. The "Agitate" here is simple: Oxidation. Without a clear shield, the sun treats your paint like a buffet, drying it out until it develops a "chalky" white haze. If your Royal Red looks more like a dusty pink or your Deep Sea Green has gone matte, that's just a layer of dead paint skin sitting on the surface. It's thirsty, and if you leave it alone, it'll eventually turn to powder and flake right off the metal.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of 1970s single-stage paint is that it's surprisingly thick, meaning you can often "exfoliate" your way back to glory. Don't just slap wax over that chalky haze-you'll just be making the "dead skin" shiny for a week. You need to use a light polishing compound to mechanically strip away the oxidized top layer and reveal the fresh, vibrant pigment underneath. Once you've brought the color back to life, remember: it needs wax or it dies. Since there's no factory clear coat, you are the only thing standing between the air and your paint. Seal it immediately and keep it waxed, or that Cobalt Blue will be back to looking like a chalkboard by next season.
