How to Find Your 1974 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1974 Audi Background Info

The 1974 Audi Vibe

Welcome to 1974, the year Audi was desperately trying to convince the world they weren't just a "fancy Volkswagen." Whether you were white-knuckling an Audi 100 or tossing a Fox into a tight corner, you were doing it in a palette that could only exist in the mid-seventies. We've got a massive 35 colors in our database for this year-a total explosion of German expressionism. You had the "safe" corporate shades like Agate Brown and Ceylon Beige for the accountants, and then you had the absolute psychedelic fever dreams like Hippy Green, Canary Yellow, and Senegal Red. It was a time when your car either blended into a harvest field or looked like a highlighter exploded on the Autobahn.

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at your '74 Audi today and wondering why the Senegal Red looks like a dusty stick of pink sidewalk chalk, welcome to the Single Stage Era. This stuff is thick, solvent-heavy acrylic enamel, and it's a living breathing thing. Unlike modern cars that have a plastic-like clear coat shield, this paint is unprotected. Over the decades, the sun has literally cooked the oils out of the finish, leading to "Oxidation." That white, hazy film on the surface isn't just dirt; it's dead paint. Also, remember: 1974 was before Audi started the whole "fully galvanized body" craze. If you see a bubble under that Alaska Blue Metallic, it's not a paint defect-it's a cry for help from the sheet metal underneath.

Restoration Tip

Here's the deal: It needs wax or it dies. Before you touch a single chip with our paint, you have to get rid of the "corpse" of the old finish. Use a medium-cut polishing compound to buff away that chalky oxidation until you see the true, deep pigment of the Agate Brown again. If you try to paint over oxidation, you're basically taping a band-aid to a ghost-it won't stick. Once you've prepped the area and applied your solvent-based touch-up, you must seal the deal with a high-quality carnauba wax. On a 1974 finish, wax isn't an "option"-it's the only thing keeping the atmosphere from eating your Audi for lunch.
