How to Find Your 1975 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1975 Audi Background Info

The 1975 Audi Vibe

In 1975, Audi was busy trying to convince the world that "Vorsprung durch Technik" meant more than just fancy engineering-it meant style. Whether you were rocking an Audi 100 or the nimble Fox (Audi 80), you weren't stuck with just grey or black. Our database shows a staggering 37 colors for '75, meaning the factory in Ingolstadt was basically a rainbow of high-solids solvent. We're talking about a time when Viper Green Metallic and Senegal Red were the kings of the road. It was an era of bold choices, where your car could be as bright as a Panama Yellow lemon or as earthy as a Harvest Gold kitchen appliance. If you're looking at one of these survivors today, you're looking at a masterpiece of 1970s chemical glory.

Paint Health Check

Listen close: this is the Single Stage Era. Back then, they didn't hide the color under a plastic-like clear coat. The pigment and the protection were mixed together in one heavy-hitting layer. But here's the rub-without a clear coat to take the hit, the sun treats your paint like an all-you-can-eat buffet. If your Bali Green or Mariner Blue looks like it's covered in white chalkboard dust, that's Oxidation. The pigment is literally dying on the surface. Unlike modern cars that "delaminate" and peel like a bad sunburn, these old Audis just go "chalky." The good news? The color is still in there, buried under a layer of dead paint. The bad news? If you ignore it, the metal starts to thirst for rust, and 1970s German steel was notoriously thirsty.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "bring it back from the dead" in a way you can't with modern cars. If you've got a dull spot on that Iberian Red hood, don't just spray over it. You need to cut through the oxidation first. Use a medium-cut rubbing compound to strip away the "chalk" and reveal the fresh pigment underneath-don't be surprised if your buffing pad turns the color of the car; that's just the dead paint coming off. Once you've found the shine, here is the golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Without a dedicated sealant or a high-quality carnauba wax, that fresh surface will oxidize again before the next oil change. Seal it up tight to keep the oxygen out and the soul of 1975 in.
