How to Find Your 1977 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1977 Audi Background Info

The 1977 Audi Vibe

In 1977, Audi was busy trying to convince the world that German engineering didn't have to be boring. Whether you were piloting a sleek 100 (the 5000 over here) or the nimble Fox, you weren't hurting for choices. Our database tracks 29 distinct colors for this year alone-a staggering number for a brand that supposedly valued "efficiency." From the earthy Agate Brown and Yosemite Yellow to the vibrant Manilla Green, Audi was clearly feeling a bit experimental. It was a time when your car could blend into a forest or stand out in a disco parking lot, depending on whether you checked the box for Bahama Blue Metallic or Carolina Green.

Paint Health Check

You're looking at the Single Stage Era, kid. Back then, we didn't hide the color under a plastic-looking clear coat; the pigment was right there on the surface, taking the punch from the sun every single day. The good news? This paint is thick and honest solvent-based stuff. The bad news? It's prone to "Oxidation." If that Brocade Red or Iberian Red looks like a chalky, pinkish mess, don't panic-the paint isn't "gone," it's just sleeping under a layer of dead pigment. Without a protective barrier, these 1977 finishes will "chalk" until there's nothing left but primer.

Restoration Tip

Because this is a single-stage finish, you have to treat it like skin: it needs to breathe and stay hydrated. If you're touching up a chip in your Moisette Metallic or Reseda Green, you first need to buff away that top layer of oxidation to find the "live" color underneath. Once you've leveled the surface and applied your match, remember the golden rule for 1977 steel: It needs wax or it dies. A high-quality carnauba or polymer sealant is the only thing standing between your Audi and a terminal case of the "chalkies." If you see color on your buffing pad, don't freak out-that's just the old school way of saying it's working.
