How to Find Your 1978 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1978 Audi Background Info

The 1978 Audi Vibe

In 1978, Audi was busy convincing the world that "Vorsprung durch Technik" wasn't just a mouthful of German syllables-it was a promise. While the rest of the automotive world was drowning in a sea of Harvest Gold and Avocado Green, the Audi 100 and the nimble Fox were carving out a niche for the refined driver. Our records show the real heavy hitter for this year was Black. In an era of disco and polyester, a black Audi was the automotive equivalent of a well-tailored suit in a room full of leisure wear. It was sophisticated, stoic, and meant business before the first Quattro ever turned a wheel.

Paint Health Check

You're dealing with the Single Stage Era, my friend. Back then, paint had some actual "meat" on its bones. There's no clear coat shell protecting the pigment on these '78 survivors; the shine you see is the actual color itself. The conflict? Oxidation. Without a protective layer, that deep Black is prone to the "Chalky Death." If it's been sitting in the sun, it's likely transitioned from a midnight mirror to a dull, charcoal grey. This paint is porous and "breathes," meaning it absorbs every bit of industrial fallout and UV radiation it can find.

Restoration Tip

When you're patching up a 1978 classic, remember: It needs wax or it dies. Because this is single-stage technology, the repair needs to be built up and then integrated. Once you've leveled your touch-up, you have to keep that surface sealed. Think of this paint like old leather-it needs "nutrition" to stay supple and deep. If you leave your repair "naked" without a high-quality carnauba or sealant, the original paint around it will continue to oxidize at a different rate, and your beautiful repair will stand out like a sore thumb. Buff it, seal it, and keep it out of the midday sun.
