How to Find Your 1990 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1990 Audi Background Info

The 1990 Audi Vibe

By 1990, Audi was busy shaking off its "unintended acceleration" ghosts and leaning hard into the "Vorsprung durch Technik" era. Whether you were rocking an 80, a 90, or the big-body 100, these cars were built like tanks and styled with a ruler. Our database has zeroed in on the survivors that really defined the look: Brilliant Black and Titanium Gray Metallic. Back then, if you weren't driving a slab of deep, non-metallic black, you were cruising in that sophisticated, tech-forward gray that made every Quattro look like it was carved out of a solid block of German steel.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the peak of the Peeling Era. By 1990, Audi had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system. It gave the cars a deep, wet-look shine on the showroom floor, but the chemistry of that early clear coat hasn't always aged with grace. We're dealing with the "Delamination" nightmare. If your roof or hood looks like it's sunburned and shedding skin, that's the clear coat losing its grip on the color coat. Once the clear lifts and the basecoat is exposed to the air, it's a race against time before your Brilliant Black turns into a chalky, gray mess that no amount of wax can save.

Restoration Tip

If you still have original paint on that Audi, you're a survivor-now act like it. The golden rule for 1990-era clear coat is: Seal chips immediately. In this era, a rock chip isn't just a blemish; it's an entry point for moisture to get under the clear coat and start the lifting process. Once the clear starts to "tunnel" away from a chip, the whole panel is headed for a respray. Clean the area with a prep solvent and dab on your touch-up color and clear before the edges have a chance to curl. Think of it as a tactical strike to keep the rest of the factory finish locked down.
