How to Find Your 1991 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1991 Audi Background Info

The 1991 Audi Vibe

In 1991, Audi was busy proving that German luxury didn't have to look like a brick with a hood ornament. Between the rally-bred 80/90 series and the executive muscle of the V8 Quattro, the four rings were carving out a niche for the "sophisticated speed" crowd. While the early '90s were starting to experiment with funky teals and forest greens, we've focused our collection on the survivors that define the era's true menacing elegance: Black and Brilliant Black. These aren't just colors; they're a statement that you're passing everyone in the left lane during a snowstorm while wearing a tailored suit.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1991, Audi was famous for their fully galvanized bodies-which is why the car hasn't dissolved into a pile of iron oxide yet-but the paint technology was still catching up to the metal. You're dealing with early basecoat-clearcoat systems. The clear coat back then was thick and glossy, but it had a nasty habit of "delaminating" or peeling away from the base color once the UV blockers gave up the ghost. If you see white, flaky edges on the roof or trunk, that's the clear coat deciding it's had enough of its job. The galvanized steel underneath is bulletproof, but the clear coat on top is likely hanging on by a prayer.

Restoration Tip

If you catch a rock chip on that Brilliant Black hood, do not "get to it next summer." Because the clear coat on these early '90s Audis is prone to lifting, a single chip can act as a gateway for moisture to get under the clear and start a peeling epidemic. Seal chips immediately. Use a fine-tipped applicator to fill the void, ensuring you overlap the edges of the surrounding clear coat slightly. This "locks down" the perimeter and prevents the clear from curling up and flaking off in sheets. If you've already got some light peeling, sand the edges of the "island" smooth with 1000-grit before touching up, or you'll just be painting over a cliff.
