How to Find Your 1999 Audi's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

1999 Audi Background Info

The 1999 Audi Vibe

1999 was a hell of a year for Ingolstadt. This was the era of the first-gen Audi TT-a car that looked like it had been carved out of a single block of industrial-grade aluminum-and the A4, which was busy teaching every other executive sedan how to wear a suit. In '99, Audi wasn't trying to distract you with a rainbow; they were perfecting the "German Uniform." We've preserved the absolute essentials from this year: Brilliant Black and Light Silver Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were a statement of minimalist precision. If you weren't driving a silver Audi at the turn of the millennium, were you even living in the future?

Paint Health Check

We are deep in the Peeling Era now. By 1999, Audi had mastered the art of galvanized steel-which is why the car hasn't turned into a pile of iron oxide-but the clear coat technology was still a bit of a heartbreaker. These cars used a thick, high-solids clear coat designed for a deep, liquid-like luster. It looks bulletproof right up until the day the UV damage wins. Once that clear coat loses its bond with the base color, it starts "delaminating"-turning into those ugly, white, flaky patches that look like the car is getting a bad sunburn. If your roof or trunk lid is starting to look "milky," you're on the clock.

Restoration Tip

In this era, your worst enemy isn't a dent-it's a breach. Because the clear coat is so thick, a single deep stone chip can act like a gateway for moisture and air to crawl under the layers. Once that happens, the clear coat will lift in a circle around the chip, and it's game over for that panel. Therefore, seal every single chip immediately. Don't wait for the weekend. The moment you see a pinhole in that Light Silver or Brilliant Black, dab it with a matched touch-up. You aren't just fixing a spot; you're anchoring the rest of the clear coat to the car so it doesn't decide to fly away on the highway.
