How to Find Your Audi A4 Avant's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

The Color Breakdown

Audi really leaned into the "Executive Commuter" aesthetic with the A4 Avant, offering a sophisticated palette of 14 recorded colors. While they definitely flirted with the rainbow via Misano Red Pearl and the deep Moro Blue Pearl, they mostly stuck to what I call the "Ingolstadt Tuxedo"-a masterclass in 50 shades of grey. From the classic Dolphin Gray Metallic to the earthy Alpaka Beige Metallic, this car was designed to look expensive even when it's covered in road salt.

What to Watch For

Before you start dabbing, you need to find your "Birth Certificate" (the paint code). On the A4 Avant, Audi hid this on a white paper sticker inside the spare tire well. You'll need to lift the trunk carpet and potentially the spare tire itself to spot it. If it's not there, check the inside cover of your original Service Maintenance book.

In terms of aging, these wagons are known for "sunburn" on the horizontal surfaces. Keep a close eye on the roof rails and the top of the tailgate; the clear coat here can get a bit brittle over time and start to flake. If you see a small chip, address it early before the edges decide to start traveling.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many of these colors-like Deep Sea Blue or Lava Gray-rely on heavy pearl and metallic flakes, your biggest enemy is "settling." These tiny sparkles love to sink to the bottom of the bottle while it sits in your drawer. Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for a full two minutes (play a song, get a workout in) to ensure those flakes are suspended. When applying, think "thin and patient." It is much better to apply three paper-thin layers that look a little low than one big "blob" that stands out like a sore thumb.
