How to Find Your Audi A6's Color Code

Audi paint color codes are printed on a paper color id tag, often found around the spare tire area; some Audis also have a metal plate on the driver door jamb. The paper tag can fall off and disappear over time, leaving codes unavailable. Codes can include two parts, e.g., LY9H and P1; LY9H often corresponds to Polar White Clearcoat, and P1 can be used for the same white on some models. Older Audi models can be hard to identify by code; custom matching may be required.

The Color Breakdown

Audi really went for it with the A6, recording a staggering 103 colors over the years. They definitely mastered the "Executive Chic" look with about fifty shades of silver and gray-including the fan-favorite Nardo Gray and the deep Daytona Gray Pearl-but they weren't afraid to party, too. If you're rocking Tornado Red, Turbo Blue, or Jasper Green, you've got a car that refuses to blend into the corporate parking lot.

What to Watch For

The A6 is a highway star, which unfortunately makes it a primary target for "road rash." Because the front end has so much surface area, those leading edges on the hood and the areas around the grille are notorious for catching rock chips. While Audi's factory paint is tough, the clear coat can be a bit "eager to chip" on the plastic bumpers. To find your exact match, don't bother looking in the door jamb like most cars. Audi hides your paint code in the trunk. Lift up the carpet and check near the spare tire well for a white paper sticker; you're looking for a four-character code like "LY9B" or "LS3H."

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many A6 colors are "Pearl" or "Metallic" effects, like Moonlight Blue or Glacier White, those tiny metallic flakes love to sink to the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for a full 60 seconds longer than you think you need to-it wakes up the sparkles so the repair actually matches the rest of the car. When applying, avoid the "big glob" method. Instead, use a toothpick to dab a tiny amount of paint into the center of the chip and let it spread itself out. It requires some patience, but building up two thin layers looks much cleaner than one thick bump.
