How to Find Your 1965 BMC's Color Code

BMC can be contacted to determine the paint color code. If a color code is not available, the alternative is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Color identification therefore comes either from BMC determining a code or from the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

1965 BMC Background Info

The 1965 BMC Vibe

Welcome to 1965, the year the British Motor Corporation was the undisputed king of the UK tarmac. Whether you were tossing a Mini Cooper through a tight corner or cruising in an MGB, the streets were a vibrant gallery of 13 distinct hues. We've kept the survivors alive in our database, from the sophisticated depth of Midnight Blue and Peat to the high-visibility flair of Pale Primrose. This was the era where "British Racing Green" wasn't just a color; it was a birthright. Between the Healy Blue roadsters and the Maltese White family saloons, BMC gave the Sixties a palette that felt as posh as a Savile Row suit but as gritty as a rainy day in Birmingham.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at an original 1965 finish, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't hide the color under a plastic-like clear coat; the pigment did all the heavy lifting itself. The "Legend" of these old BMC paints is that they are thick and honest, BUT they are also prone to "Oxidation." If your Sherwood Green or Riveria Blue looks like it's been dusted with white chalkboard chalk, that's the paint literally dying on the vine. Without a protective layer, the sun bakes the life out of the pigment, leaving it dull, porous, and ready to invite rust-BMC's oldest enemy-to the party.

Restoration Tip

Since 1965 paint is a single-stage beast, it has a secret: there is usually fresh color hiding just beneath that chalky surface. Your best friend isn't a spray gun; it's a high-quality buffing compound. You need to gently "shave" off that dead, oxidized top layer to reveal the vibrant British Racing Green No 2 or Chalk Blue underneath. Once you've found the shine, remember the Salty Painter's Golden Rule: It needs wax or it dies. Without a heavy coat of paste wax to seal those pores, the oxidation will be back before the next bank holiday. Seal it tight, or you'll be watching your heritage flake away into the gutter.
