How to Find Your 1969 BMC's Color Code

BMC can be contacted to determine the paint color code. If a color code is not available, the alternative is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Color identification therefore comes either from BMC determining a code or from the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

1969 BMC Background Info

The 1969 BMC Vibe

1969 was the year the world watched a man walk on the moon, while back in Longbridge and Abingdon, BMC was busy perfecting the art of the "stiff upper lip" in automotive form. Whether you were tossing a Mini Cooper around a rally stage or cruising in an MGB with the top down, 1969 was about rich, confident tones. Our database captures 11 of the era's finest survivors-from the deep, sophisticated Sable and Damask Red to the iconic British Racing Green No 2 and Old English White No. 2. It was a palette that looked expensive, even when the Lucas electrics were having a mid-life crisis.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. In 1969, "clear coat" was something they used on grand pianos, not cars. Your BMC was finished in a thick, pigment-heavy lacquer or enamel that was meant to be polished into a mirror shine. But here's the rub: without a modern clear shield, these paints are prone to Oxidation. If your Basilica Blue or Florida Green looks like it's been dusted with a chalkboard eraser, that's the pigment literally dying from UV exposure. The paint isn't necessarily gone; it's just "chalking"-sacrificing its surface to the sun.

Restoration Tip

This is old-school chemistry, and it's simple: it needs wax or it dies. Before you apply a single drop of touch-up to that Healy Blue or Pale Primrose, you have to get rid of the "dead" paint. Use a light rubbing compound to cut through the oxidation until the color underneath looks wet and vibrant again. Once you've finished your repair, seal the whole panel with a high-quality carnauba wax. That wax is the only thing standing between your 1969 classic and a permanent matte finish.
