How to Find Your 1971 BMC's Color Code

BMC can be contacted to determine the paint color code. If a color code is not available, the alternative is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Color identification therefore comes either from BMC determining a code or from the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

1971 BMC Background Info

The 1971 BMC Vibe

Welcome to 1971, the year British Leyland was trying to figure out if it was a car company or a social experiment. Whether you were tossing a Mini Cooper around a tight corner or cruising in an MG B, the aesthetic was unmistakable. This was the year BMC really leaned into the "Skittles" palette. With 13 colors in our vault, from the retina-searing Blaze Red and Bronze Yellow to the "it's definitely the seventies" Limeflower and Bedouin Beige, there was a shade for every mood-mostly ranging from "High Impact" to "British Countryside Fog." It was a glorious time for pigment before everything turned into a sea of silver and grey.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here, folks. Back in '71, the factory didn't bother with a clear coat; they just sprayed the color and sent it out to sit in a rainy field in Longbridge. This paint is honest, but it's high-maintenance. If your Damask Red looks more like a dusty pink or your Mallard Green has developed a chalky, white film, you're looking at classic oxidation. The sun literally eats the top layer of the pigment. Without a clear coat to act as a sacrificial shield, the color itself takes the hit. It's a "use it and lose it" situation-if you didn't keep it under a cover or buried in wax, that finish is likely gasping for air by now.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage paint, you've actually got a secret weapon: you can often polish the "dead" paint right off to find the "live" color underneath. If you're touching up a chip in Teal Blue or Wild Moss, remember that 1971 paint is thirsty. It needs a solid foundation. Before you go slapping on a fresh coat, use a specialized solvent cleaner to get the years of old wax and road grime out of the pores of the paint. Once you've applied your color, treat it like a living thing: it needs wax or it dies. A high-quality carnauba shield is the only thing standing between your fresh repair and the inevitable return of the "chalky fade."
