How to Find Your 1972 BMC's Color Code

BMC can be contacted to determine the paint color code. If a color code is not available, the alternative is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Color identification therefore comes either from BMC determining a code or from the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

1972 BMC Background Info

The 1972 BMC Vibe

Welcome to 1972, the year British Leyland decided to paint the world in a "motoring rainbow" of earth tones and eye-watering vibrance. We've got 14 survivors in the database from this vintage, and let me tell you, it was a weird time to be holding a spray gun. You had the quintessential "70s Beige" of Harvest Gold sitting right next to the psychedelic Limeflower and the deep, moody Black Tulip. Whether you were masking up a Mini or an MGB, the vibe was clear: if the color didn't look like it belonged on a corduroy sofa or a high-visibility vest like Blaze Red, you weren't doing it right.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era, my friend. This stuff is thick, honest, and as porous as a tea sponge. Back in '72, clear coats were a futuristic dream that hadn't quite hit the Longbridge assembly line yet. The "Legend" of these paints is that they have character, BUT the reality is Oxidation. If your Damask Red looks more like a dusty pink chalkboard, that's the pigment literally giving up the ghost under the sun. Because there's no clear protective layer, the environmental grime settles right into the pores of the finish. It's a "living" paint-and if you don't feed it, it dies.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage paint, you've got a fighting chance that modern clear-coat-only guys don't have: you can actually polish the "dead" layer off. If you're touching up a chip in Mallard Green or Teal Blue, remember that the surrounding paint has likely faded a shade or two. My advice? Give the whole panel a light mechanical polish first to find the real color hiding underneath the oxidation. Once you've applied your touch-up and leveled it, you must seal it with a high-quality carnuba wax. In this era, it's simple: it needs wax or it dies. Treat it like a leather boot-keep it sealed, or the weather will turn it into a cracker.
