How to Find Your 1975 BMC's Color Code

BMC can be contacted to determine the paint color code. If a color code is not available, the alternative is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Color identification therefore comes either from BMC determining a code or from the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

1975 BMC Background Info

The 1975 BMC Vibe

Welcome to 1975-the year of the three-day week, polyester bell-bottoms, and a British Leyland factory floor that was more likely to be on strike than on schedule. Despite the industrial chaos, the color palette for the Mini, MGB, and the "love-it-or-hate-it" Allegro was nothing short of a technicolor fever dream. We've tracked down 13 survivors for our database, and they are pure 70s soul. You've got the psychedelic punch of Aconite (Purple) and Tahiti Blue playing alongside the era's obsession with earth tones like Harvest Gold, Bracken, and the "is-it-green-or-is-it-mud?" Tundra. It was a time when your car didn't just transport you; it made a loud, vibey statement.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at original 1975 paint, you're looking at the peak of the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't hide the color under a plastic-like clear coat; the pigment did all the heavy lifting itself. But here's the rub: 1975 was notorious for quality control. Many of these cars spent weeks sitting in muddy fields during factory walkouts before they even saw a showroom. Today, the biggest threat is Oxidation. If your Damask Red looks like a pink chalkboard or your Cosmic Blue Metallic has turned a ghostly grey, that's the paint "chalking" as the binder gives up the ghost. It's not peeling-it's literally turning to dust.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage solvent-heavy territory, the paint is surprisingly thick and "honest." If it looks dead, don't panic-there is often a beautiful finish hiding under that chalky top layer. Use a high-quality rubbing compound to "cut" through the oxidation and bring the original Brazil Metallic or Bronze Yellow back to life. But remember the Golden Rule of the 70s: It needs wax or it dies. Without a sacrificial layer of high-grade wax to block the UV rays, the sun will drink that fresh pigment for breakfast. Feed the paint, seal it, and keep it out of the rain, or you'll be buffing it again by next summer.
