What to Watch For

Your X3 is a magnet for two things: groceries and rock chips. Because of that upright SUV snout, the hood and front bumper tend to get "peppered" on the highway. If you have a 2020-2021 model, keep a close eye on the tight spots-like where the bumper meets the headlights or the wheel arches. Owners have noted that the paint can occasionally decide to part ways with the plastic trim in those high-friction areas.

To find your exact match, open the driver's door and look at the "B-pillar" (the frame) for a black sticker. If it's not there, pop the hood and check the strut towers or the underside of the hood itself. You're looking for a 3-digit code (like 300 or A52) or a name that sounds very sophisticated and German, like Alpinweiss III.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many X3 colors are Metallic or Pearl (looking at you, Phytonic Blue and Mineral White), your biggest challenge isn't the color-it's the "flop." Metallic flakes like to sink to the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen for at least 60 seconds-longer than you think you need-to wake up those sparkles.

When you're filling those tiny rock chips on the hood, ditch the brush that comes in the cap. It's too big and will leave a blob. Instead, use a wooden toothpick to drop a tiny bead of paint into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. If you're working with a "Frozen" or "Matt" finish, remember: skip the clear coat! Adding a shiny clear coat to a matte car is like wearing a tuxedo jacket with sweatpants-it just doesn't match the vibe.
