How to Find Your 1956 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1956 Buick Background Info

The 1956 Buick Vibe

Welcome to 1956, where the chrome is heavy, the V8s are "Nailheads," and Buick was having a full-blown Technicolor fever dream. This was the peak of the "Spring Color" craze-a time when you could roll a Roadmaster or a Century off the lot in Tahiti Coral or Apricot without anyone questioning your toughness. With 17 colors in our vault, we've tracked everything from the dignified Carlsbad Black to the experimental metallics like Cadet Blue. In '56, if your car wasn't two-toned, you weren't trying; seeing a Dover White roof over a Bittersweet body was just standard procedure for the suburban elite.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in the Single Stage Era here. Back then, Buick was pivoting into acrylic lacquers to get that mile-deep shine, but don't let the gloss fool you-this paint is a living, breathing thing. Because there's no clear coat to shield the pigment, your Seminole Red or Electric Blue Metallic is constantly fighting a losing battle against the sun. If your Buick looks like it's covered in a fine white powder, that's not dust; it's Oxidation. The paint is literally chalking away, sacrificing its top layer to the UV rays. Left untreated, the pigment will go "dead," becoming porous and brittle until there's nothing left to polish.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1956 iron? It needs wax or it dies. If you're dealing with original single-stage paint, stop before you reach for the heavy-grit rubbing compound. You aren't "leveling" a clear coat; you're shaving off precious, irreplaceable color. Start with a dedicated paint cleaner or a very fine glaze to hydrate the pigments. Once you've brought the luster back to that Foam Green or Glacier Green, you have to seal it immediately. A high-quality carnauba or a period-correct solvent-based sealant is the only thing standing between your Buick and a one-way trip to "Chalk-Town."
