How to Find Your 1960 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1960 Buick Background Info

The 1960 Buick Vibe

Welcome to 1960, the year Buick decided your driveway should look like a jewelry box. Whether you were piloting a slab-sided LeSabre or the king-of-the-road Electra 225, you were wrapped in GM's "Magic Mirror" acrylic lacquer. We've got 15 era-perfect colors in our vault for this year, and boy, they didn't hold back. From the icy reach of Arctic White to the deep, space-age shimmer of Silver Mist Poly and Chalet Blue Poly, Buick was obsessed with "polychromatic" (that's "metallic" for you youngsters) finishes that made these land yachts look like they were moving even when they were parked at the soda shop.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era, my friend. Back then, the color was the finish-there's no clear coat "shield" standing between your Midnight Blue Poly and the cruel, harsh sun. If your Buick has been sitting out, you're likely looking at "The Chalk." That's oxidation, where the top layer of the lacquer literally dies and turns into a dusty, matte film. Because this paint is porous, it's also prone to "checking"-those tiny spiderweb cracks that happen when the lacquer gets old and brittle. If it looks like a chalkboard, the pigment is gasping for air.

Restoration Tip

Here's the golden rule for 1960 lacquer: It needs wax or it dies. If you're lucky enough to have original paint that's just gone dull, you can often "revive" it with a slow, careful buff to remove the oxidized layer and reveal the Titian Red Poly underneath. But listen to me: go easy. You're working with a finite amount of paint, and once you buff through to the primer, there's no "undo" button. Once you get that shine back, seal it immediately with a heavy carnauba wax. Think of it like skin-keep it moisturized and protected, or the sun will turn your luxury liner into a rust bucket before the next leap year.
