How to Find Your 1962 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1962 Buick Background Info

The 1962 Buick Vibe

In 1962, Buick wasn't just building cars; they were building land yachts with enough chrome to blind a low-flying pilot. Whether you were piloting a top-tier Electra 225 or a sporty Skylark, you were making a statement. Our database shows 16 different ways to make that statement-back when "variety" meant more than five shades of rental-car gray. We're talking about high-character hues like Camelot Rose Poly and Bronze Mist Poly. These weren't just colors; they were personality traits for the rising middle class. If you see a survivor in Marlin Blue today, you're looking at a time when Buick was the undisputed king of the suburban driveway.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '62, Buick was spraying "Magic-Mirror" acrylic lacquer, and while it was thick enough to withstand a meteor strike, it had one major enemy: the sun. You won't see this paint peeling off like a cheap sunburn-that's a modern problem. Instead, you get "Oxidation." Your deep Burgundy Poly will slowly turn into a chalky, pinkish matte mess that looks like it was dusted with flour. The solvents have spent sixty years trying to escape, and without a protective layer, the pigment is just sitting there exposed to the elements, waiting to die.

Restoration Tip

If your Buick looks like it's growing a layer of white chalk, don't panic-it's just the paint screaming for a drink. You've got enough thickness in that old lacquer to buff out the dead surface, but remember the Salty Painter's creed: It needs wax or it dies. Once you polish away the oxidation to find that Glacier Blue hiding underneath, you have to seal it immediately. These old single-stage finishes are porous; if you don't keep them under a heavy coat of wax or a high-quality sealant, they'll oxidize again before you can even get the car back in the garage.
