How to Find Your 1963 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1963 Buick Background Info

The 1963 Buick Vibe

Welcome to 1963, the year Buick decided to stop playing nice and started building "rolling sculpture." This was the debut of the Riviera-a car so sharp it looked like it could cut glass-alongside heavy hitters like the Electra 225 and the Wildcat. Buick wasn't just selling transportation; they were selling "Magic-Mirror" finishes. With 15 colors in the stable, from the icy Arctic White to the moody Diplomat Blue Poly, the showroom floor looked like a jewelry box. If you were cruising in Camelot Rose Poly, you weren't just driving; you were making a statement that the neighbors couldn't ignore.

Paint Health Check

Here's the deal: 1963 was the heart of the Single Stage Era. That "Magic-Mirror" shine came from thick acrylic lacquer that was buffed to a high heaven at the factory. But here's the rub-lacquer is a living, breathing thing. It doesn't "peel" like a modern clear coat; instead, it suffers from "The Chalk." If your Spruce Green Poly or Bronze Mist Poly looks like someone did a burnout with a chalkboard eraser on your hood, that's oxidation. The sun has literally cooked the oils out of the top layer, leaving behind a dead, dusty husk of pigment. If you see hairline cracks (we call that "checking"), the paint is brittle and gasping for air.

Restoration Tip

If the paint is original, don't panic-it's probably thicker than the steel on a modern crossover. Because there's no clear coat, the color goes all the way through. It needs wax or it dies. Before you touch it with a polisher, use a heavy-duty cleaner to "exfoliate" that dead, chalky layer of oxidation. Once you see the true Marlin Blue or Willow Mist peeking through, you've got to seal it immediately. These old single-stage formulas are porous; if you don't keep a heavy coat of wax or sealant on them, they'll oxidize again before you finish your next Sunday drive. Rub it, seal it, and keep it out of the midday sun.
