How to Find Your 1965 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1965 Buick Background Info

The 1965 Buick Vibe

In 1965, if you were driving a Buick, you'd arrived. Whether it was the razor-edge styling of the Riviera or the muscle-bound Wildcat, these cars were the "Goldilocks" of the GM lineup-fancier than a Chevy, but not as stuffy as a Caddy. We've cataloged 15 colors from this year, and let me tell you, it was the era of the "Poly." Back then, "Poly" was just fancy talk for metallic, and Buick was obsessed with it. From the tropical Turquoise Mist Poly to the deep, soulful Midnight Aqua Poly, these weren't just colors; they were statements. It was a buffet of mists, creams, and greens that made every driveway in the suburbs look like a high-end country club.

Paint Health Check

Now, listen close, because your 1965 survivor is wearing what we call Single Stage Acrylic Lacquer. In the trade, GM called it "Magic-Mirror" finish. It was thick, hard, and looked deep enough to swim in when it left the factory. But here's the rub: lacquer is a living, breathing thing. Without a modern clear coat to shield it, the sun treats your paint like a snack. If your Verde Green Poly looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a forest, you're looking at Oxidation. The oils have evaporated, leaving behind a "chalky" residue of dead pigment. You might also see "Checking"-those tiny spider-web cracks where the lacquer has shrunk and split over the last sixty years. It's not a death sentence, but it means the paint is thirsty.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a chip or trying to bring back that Silver Cloud Poly luster, remember the Golden Rule of the Single Stage Era: It needs wax or it dies. Because this paint is porous, it has no defense against the elements once the factory oils are gone. When you apply a repair, you aren't just adding color; you're trying to seal a vintage shell. After you've leveled your touch-up, don't just walk away. You need to feed that finish with a high-quality Carnauba or a modern sealant. If you don't keep a barrier between the lacquer and the air, the oxidation will move back in faster than a bad tenant. Buff it until it shines, then seal it like it's a national treasure.
