How to Find Your 1968 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1968 Buick Background Info

The 1968 Buick Vibe

Welcome to 1968, the year Buick decided to lean hard into the "Coke bottle" curves and "Sweepspear" styling. Whether you're steering a GS 400, a Riviera, or a massive Electra 225, you aren't just driving a car; you're piloting a living room with a big-block heartbeat. We've got 21 era-perfect shades in our vault for this year, and let me tell you, the variety was staggering. From the moody depth of Midnight Teal Poly to the suburban class of Olive Gold Poly and the high-speed scream of Scarlet Red, Buick wasn't afraid to use the whole color wheel. These cars were draped in thick, heavy acrylic lacquer that had a glow no modern robot can replicate.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era, my friend. Back then, there was no "clear coat" bodyguard to protect your color; the pigment was the front line. If your Buick has been sitting out, that Inca Silver Mist or Aqua Mist Poly probably looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a mirror. That's oxidation-it's essentially the paint "breathing" its last breath as it dries out and turns to chalk. Worse yet, original lacquer is famous for "checking" or "crows feet"-tiny cracks that happen when the paint gets brittle and shrinks over five decades of heat cycles. If you don't keep these finishes sealed, the elements don't just sit on the paint; they eat it.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up an original 1968 finish, remember the Golden Rule of Lacquer: It needs wax or it dies. Before you apply any new color to a chip or scratch, you have to get rid of the "dead" paint. Use a fine polishing compound to rub away the chalky oxidation until the true color of the Burnished Saddle Poly or Deep Blue Poly starts to peek through again. Once you've applied your touch-up and let it cure, seal the entire panel with a high-quality Carnauba wax. Think of it like lotion for old skin-it puts the oils back in and keeps that single-stage pigment from cracking further. Neglect the wax, and you're just watching a slow-motion disappearance of GM history.
