How to Find Your 1969 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1969 Buick Background Info

The 1969 Buick Vibe

In 1969, a Buick wasn't just a car; it was a "doctor's car"-the thinking man's luxury. Whether you were piloting a muscular GS 400, a sleek Skylark, or the massive Electra 225 (the "Deuce and a Quarter"), you were wrapped in some of the finest acrylic lacquer GM ever sprayed. With 21 colors in our vault, we've tracked down everything from the high-impact Signal Red to the sophisticated Azure Turquoise Poly. This was the pinnacle of the "heavy metallic" era, where deep greens like Fathom Green Poly and shimmering Olympic Gold Poly defined the American driveway.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your factory finish doesn't have a clear coat "shield" to hide behind. Back then, the color and the protection were one and the same. If your Buick has been sitting in the sun, you're likely looking at heavy oxidation-that chalky, hazy film that makes your Burnished Brown look like a dusty blackboard. Worse yet, 1960s lacquer is famous for "checking" or "spider-webbing" as the paint dries out and loses its oils. If you rub a cloth on the hood and the color comes off on the rag, don't panic-that's just the "dead" paint layer reaching out for help.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1969 steel: It needs wax or it dies. If you're working with a metallic shade like Cortez Silver Poly or Glacier Blue Poly, be prepared-when you polish these single-stage metallics, your buffing pad is going to turn black or gray. That isn't dirt; it's the actual aluminum flakes in the paint oxidizing. To save the finish, you have to gently polish away the "dead" oxidized layer to reveal the fresh pigment underneath. Once you find that 1969 glow, seal it immediately. Without a regular coat of high-quality wax, the air will start eating your color again before the next oil change.
