How to Find Your 1974 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1974 Buick Background Info

The 1974 Buick Vibe

It's 1974. You're sitting in a gas line long enough to read a Tolstoy novel, but at least your Buick looks the part. Whether you were piloting a top-tier Electra or the sporty, German-bred Opel, Buick wasn't shy about the palette. We're talking 35 distinct shades in our database for this year-a massive spread for an era defined by shortages. From the loud-and-proud Apollo Orange and Signal Yellow to the sophisticated Antique Bronze Poly, these cars were rolling statements of "More is More." It was the peak of deep, solvent-heavy finishes that looked like you could reach your hand right into the metal.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. Back then, "Clear Coat" was something you only found on high-end furniture, not on a Buick. Your car's paint is honest-it's pigment all the way through, from the surface to the primer. But here's the rub: single-stage paint is porous and hungry. If your Jade Mist Poly looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a gemstone, you're dealing with heavy oxidation. Without a clear top layer to act as a shield, the sun literally bakes the life out of the pigment, leaving behind a "chalky" fade. It's a simple rule for 1974: it needs wax, or it dies.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of 1970s lacquer and enamel is that it's thick enough to forgive a lot of sins. If the paint is dull but hasn't cracked into "crows' feet" yet, you can bring it back from the dead. You'll need to "cut" through the oxidized top layer using a polishing compound. Don't panic when your buffing pad turns the color of the car-that's just the dead paint coming off to reveal the fresh Nutmeg Poly underneath. Once you've found the shine, you must seal those pores immediately. Use a heavy-duty wax or sealant to lock out the oxygen, or you'll be back to a matte finish before the next oil change.
