How to Find Your 1977 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1977 Buick Background Info

The 1977 Buick Vibe

Welcome back to 1977, where the hoods were longer than some modern driveways and "The Spirit of American Luxury" meant fitting as many neighbors as possible into a LeSabre or an Electra 225. Buick wasn't playing around this year; they dropped a staggering 24 colors on the world, ranging from the dignified Antique White to the downright daring Corvette Chartreuse. This was the peak of the metallic "Firemist" obsession-colors like Amber Firemist Metallic and Red Firemist weren't just paint; they were a status symbol that sparkled like a disco ball under the streetlights of a suburban steakhouse.

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at a survivor today, you're looking at the Single Stage Era. This stuff is honest-to-god acrylic lacquer, and while it looks deep enough to swim in when it's fresh, it's got a shelf life if you neglect it. In the business, we call the main enemy "The Chalk." Because there's no clear coat standing guard on top, the sun's UV rays literally cook the pigment, leading to Oxidation. If your Dark Aqua Poly or Firethorn looks like someone rubbed a blackboard eraser all over it, that's the paint dying of thirst. It's not peeling-it's just turning back into dust.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage lacquer, you've actually got a chance at a miracle. Unlike modern thin factory finishes, this paint is thick enough to take a bit of a "shave." Grab a high-quality buffing compound and a machine polisher to cut through that milky oxidation layer and find the buried treasure underneath. But listen to me: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've brought that Buckskin Poly back to life, you have to seal it. Without a regular coat of carnauba or a modern sealant, the air will start eating it again by next Tuesday. Keep it fed, and it'll keep shining.
