How to Find Your 1988 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1988 Buick Background Info

The 1988 Buick Vibe

In 1988, Buick was the "Doctor's Car"-plush, quiet, and built for people who appreciated a smooth ride over a fast one. While the high-performance guys were chasing the last of the GNXs, the rest of the world was comfortably cruising in the "All Other Models" crowd-the Centurys, LeSabres, and Electras that defined suburban luxury. When it comes to the palette, we've focused on the survivors: Black and White. In '88, these weren't just colors; they were the heavy hitters. Most of the experimental metallics from that year turned into a chalky memory decades ago, but a Buick in crisp White or deep Black still commands the fast lane (even if it's doing exactly the speed limit).

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at your 1988 Buick today, you're likely dealing with the "Peeling Era." This was the dawn of the mass-market clear coat, and the chemistry hadn't quite figured out how to stay bonded to the basecoat under the hot sun. We call it Delamination. It starts as a small, cloudy bubble and quickly turns into the car "shedding skin," leaving behind a dull, unprotected base layer. If your roof or trunk looks like it has a bad sunburn with white, flaky edges, you're witnessing the clear coat giving up the ghost. It's a classic GM trait from this decade-tough engines, but the clear coat had a wandering eye.

Restoration Tip

On a 1988 finish, a rock chip is more than a localized dent; it's an invitation for the clear coat to start lifting. Seal your chips immediately. If you see a tiny crater in the paint, don't wait for the weekend-get some color on it to lock the edges of the clear coat down. If you're already seeing "the peel," you'll need to very gently sand those flaky white edges back with a fine-grit paper until you hit solid territory before applying your touch-up. If you just paint over the loose clear, your repair will lift off the car faster than a Buick on a downhill grade.
