How to Find Your 1991 Buick's Color Code

Buick used many different locations over the years, so the paint color plate can be hard to find. GM did not standardize the location. Commonly cited spots are the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be anywhere. The code format typically looks like 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N), and two-tone entries may show U or L (BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1991 Buick Background Info

The 1991 Buick Vibe

Welcome to 1991, the year Buick was trying to figure out if it was a "doctor's car" or a luxury yacht on wheels. Between the massive Roadmaster Estate wagons and the surprisingly nimble Optima, Buick was hedging its bets. In our database, we've focused on the ultimate survivors of this era: Black and White. These weren't just colors; they were the corporate uniform. If you weren't driving a white Century to a PTA meeting, you were likely in a black Riviera feeling like a low-level mob boss. It was a time of velvet seats, cassette decks, and paint that had a very complicated relationship with the sun.

Paint Health Check

The early '90s were the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1991, Buick was fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry hadn't quite caught up to the marketing. We call it "The Great Delamination." If your Buick has spent more than a week in the Texas or Florida sun, you've probably seen the clear coat starting to lift like a bad sunburn. The bond between the color and the clear was often more of a polite suggestion than a permanent seal. Once that UV damage hits a certain point, the clear starts to flake off in sheets, leaving the basecoat underneath looking dry, chalky, and vulnerable to the elements.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a rock chip isn't just a cosmetic annoyance-it's an invitation for delamination. Because the clear coat on these Buicks can be brittle, a single impact can create a "liftoff point" where moisture and air get trapped under the clear. Therefore, you must seal chips immediately. Don't wait for the weekend. Clean the area and dab on your touch-up color followed by a clear sealer. This "pins" the edges of the factory clear coat down, preventing that tiny nick from turning into a dinner-plate-sized peel by next summer.
