How to Find Your 1959 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1959 Cadillac Background Info

The 1959 Cadillac Vibe

If 1959 was anything, it was the year Cadillac decided that "enough" was a word for other people. This was the era of the Eldorado and the Series 62, cars defined by tailfins so sharp they could pick up radar and enough chrome to blind a low-flying pilot. With 19 different colors in our database, it's clear the factory wasn't shy. Whether your Caddy is rocking the iconic Seminole Red, the space-age Gotham Gold, or the surprisingly subtle Wood Rose Metallic, these cars were designed to be seen from orbit. It was a time of optimism, excess, and paint that looked six inches deep.

Paint Health Check

Back in '59, we were firmly in the Single Stage Era. General Motors was pioneering acrylic lacquers like Lucite, which gave these boats their legendary shine, but it came with a shelf life. Unlike modern cars that peel like a sunburn, 1959 paint dies a slow, honorable death known as "Oxidation." If your Vegas Turquoise Metallic is looking more like a chalkboard than a gemstone, that's the pigment giving up the ghost. You also have to watch for "checking"-those tiny, spider-web cracks also called "crow's feet." That's the old lacquer shrinking after sixty-odd years of expanding and contracting in the sun.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for this era is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Single-stage paint is porous; it breathes, and if you don't seal it, the elements will literally suck the life out of the color. If you're working with one of the "Poly" (metallic) shades like Argent Silver Poly or Inverness Green Poly, be careful with the buffer. You've only got so much pigment to work with before you hit primer. Use a high-quality carnauba wax to feed the paint and keep that mid-century glow alive. Treat it like a fine mahogany table-keep it fed, keep it covered, and never let it bake in the sun unprotected.
