How to Find Your 1962 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1962 Cadillac Background Info

The 1962 Cadillac Vibe

In 1962, Cadillac was still the undisputed "Standard of the World," even if the tailfins were starting to head back down to earth. Whether you were piloting a Series 62 or lounging in the back of a Fleetwood, you were moving a three-ton block of American confidence. Cadillac didn't just offer colors; they offered a spectrum of mid-century optimism. Our database tracks 20 distinct shades for this year, ranging from the understated Olympic White to the "look-at-me" shimmer of Heather Poly and Turquoise Poly. This was the era of the "Poly" (metallic) finish, where fine aluminum flakes were suspended in deep, rich lacquer to give that Eldorado Biarritz a glow that could be seen from three zip codes away.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era. Back then, GM was spraying "Lucite" acrylic lacquer-a paint that was thick, deep, and incredibly high-maintenance. Because there is no clear coat protecting your Burgundy Poly or York Blue Poly, the paint is essentially "naked" to the elements. The enemy here isn't peeling or delamination; it's Oxidation. If your Caddy looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's "chalking." The sun has cooked the oils right out of the resin, leaving the pigment to die on the surface. If you rub your hand across a dry 1962 survivor and your palm comes away the color of Maize, your paint is literally starving to death.

Restoration Tip

This paint has a "memory," and it remembers when it was pampered. Since this is a single-stage finish, it needs wax or it dies. Before you go aggressive with a high-speed buffer on those long quarters, try a heavy "feeding" of the paint with a non-abrasive polish or a high-oils glaze to rehydrate the lacquer. When you're using our touch-up kits for those inevitable stone chips in your Nevada Silver Poly, remember that you're working with a solvent-based product designed to bite into that old lacquer. Build your layers slowly, and once it's cured, seal the entire panel with a high-quality carnauba. It's the only thing keeping the "Standard of the World" from becoming a very expensive chalkboard.
