How to Find Your 1964 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1964 Cadillac Background Info

The 1964 Cadillac Vibe

In 1964, a Cadillac wasn't just a car; it was a geographic event. Whether you were piloting a Fleetwood Sixty Special or a DeVille, you were commanding miles of Detroit's finest sheet metal. Cadillac went all-in on variety this year, offering a massive palette of 21 colors. While everyone else was playing it safe, Cadillac was showing off the "Firemist" series-premium options like Firemist Aquamarine and Firemist Saddle that used borosilicate glass flakes to catch the sun. It was the height of mid-century prestige, where a car's finish was expected to look as deep as a country club swimming pool.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. In '64, GM was spraying "Magic-Mirror" acrylic lacquer. It looks incredible when it's fresh, but here's the rub: it's a living, breathing finish with no clear coat to protect it. Over sixty years, that lacquer shrinks and develops "checking"-those tiny spiderweb cracks that tell you the paint is thirsty. If your Turino Turquoise or Royal Maroon looks like a dusty chalkboard, you're looking at heavy oxidation. The pigment is literally dying on the surface because it's been baked by the sun for six decades without a bodyguard.

Restoration Tip

It needs wax or it dies. Because this is single-stage paint, it's incredibly porous. When you use our touch-up to fix a chip on that Nevada Silver or Aspen White, remember that you aren't just matching a color; you're trying to seal a leak. Once your repair is level, you have to feed the surrounding paint. Buff the area gently to remove the "chalk," then bury the repair in a high-quality carnauba wax. If you don't keep a barrier between the atmosphere and that old lacquer, the oxidation will move right back in and dull your hard work in a matter of months.
