We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Your 1969 Caddy was sprayed with thick acrylic lacquer-it's beautiful, it's classic, but it's also temperamental. Because there is no clear coat to shield the pigment, your paint is "naked" to the elements. If your San Mateo Red Poly or Astral Blue Poly looks more like a chalkboard than a mirror, you're looking at Oxidation. That chalky residue is literally dead paint. Worse yet, those Firemist metallics contain real metal flakes that will turn black and dull if they aren't sealed. Left alone in the sun, this paint doesn't just fade; it "checks" and develops tiny spider-web cracks as the lacquer gets brittle and shrinks over the decades.

Restoration Tip

Here is the Golden Rule for 1969 lacquer: It needs wax or it dies. Unlike modern thin enamels, this old-school paint is porous and needs "hydration" to stay supple. If you're seeing heavy oxidation, don't just start hacking away with a high-speed buffer-you'll burn through to the primer before you know it. Use a heavy carnauba wax or a specialized paint restorer to feed the finish. Think of it like old leather; you want to bring the oils back to the surface. Once you get that Sable Black or Empire Maroon shining again, keep a thick coat of wax on it at all times to lock out the oxygen, or the "chalk" will be back before the next oil change.
