How to Find Your 1972 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1972 Cadillac Background Info

The 1972 Cadillac Vibe

In 1972, a Cadillac wasn't just a car; it was a three-ton statement of arrival. Whether you were piloting a Coupe de Ville or the front-wheel-drive Eldorado, you weren't just driving-you were navigating. With 22 colors in our vault, it's clear that Cadillac didn't believe in "subtle." This was the peak of the Earth-tone empire, where heavy metallics like Balmoral Green Firemist and Promenade Gold Poly ruled the road. The "Firemist" options were the real showstoppers, packed with extra-large metallic flakes that caught the sun like a disco ball on the Vegas strip.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era. Back then, the factory was shooting thick, brittle Acrylic Lacquer. It looked like a mile-deep mirror when it left Detroit, but lacquer has a memory, and it's a short one. If your Caddy has been sitting, you're likely looking at "chalking"-that dusty, white oxidation where the sun has literally cooked the life out of the pigment. Worse yet, 1972 paint is prone to "checking," those tiny spiderweb cracks that happen when the metal expands and the brittle lacquer refuses to move with it. If it's chalky, we can save it; if it's checked, you're looking at a deeper character flaw.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, your biggest enemy is the elements. My golden rule for 1972 lacquer: It needs wax or it dies. If you're touching up a spot, remember that the surrounding old paint is likely "dead" on the surface. You'll need to lightly buff the area first to reveal the true color underneath before applying your touch-up. Once you've leveled your repair, seal the entire panel with a high-quality carnauba wax. Without that sacrificial layer of protection, the sun will start eating that fresh paint before the next oil change.
