How to Find Your 1975 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1975 Cadillac Background Info

The 1975 Cadillac Vibe

If you're piloting a 1975 Cadillac, you aren't just driving a car; you're navigating a three-ton statement of American excess. This was the year of the Fleetwood Brougham and the Eldorado, where hoods were longer than most modern driveways. Our database tracks 24 colors for this year, and Cadillac wasn't exactly known for being "subtle." From the sunshine-soaked Bombay Yellow to the punchy Mandarin Orange Poly, these cars were designed to be seen from three blocks away. If you opted for a "Firemist" finish like Gossamer Blue or Emberust, you weren't just getting paint-you were getting a heavy hit of metallic flake that shimmered like a disco ball in a high-end steakhouse.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '75, Cadillac was still laying down thick layers of pigment that looked like liquid glass, but it lacked the sacrificial shield of a modern clear coat. That means your Sable Black or Firethorn Poly is raw and exposed. The primary enemy? Oxidation. If your Caddy's finish looks like a dusty chalkboard, that's the paint "chalking" as the binders break down under the sun. It's literally the paint dying on the vine. This era was also the peak of the vinyl top, which-while stylish-acted as a moisture-trapping "roof sweater" that invited rust to eat your Georgian Silver from the inside out.

Restoration Tip

When dealing with 1970s single-stage lacquer, your mantra is simple: It needs wax or it dies. You can often buff these old finishes back to a showroom shine because the pigment is consistent all the way through, but you have to be careful not to "burn" through the edges. If you're patching a chip in Jennifer Blue or Tarragon Gold, you need a high-solids solvent match that carries enough "body" to fill the crater. Modern, thin factory paints won't cut it. Once you've got the color back, keep a thick coat of carnauba wax on it to seal out the oxygen, or you'll be looking at a chalky ghost of a Cadillac by next summer.
