How to Find Your 1977 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1977 Cadillac Background Info

The 1977 Cadillac Vibe

1977 was the year Cadillac decided to "downsize," but don't let the marketing talk fool you-these were still massive slabs of Detroit steel with enough surface area to require their own zip codes. Whether you were gliding in a Coupe de Ville or a Fleetwood Brougham, you weren't just driving; you were piloting a statement. With 16 colors in our vault, from the understated elegance of Bemini Beige to the absolute psychedelic shimmer of Frost Orange Firemist Metallic and Damson Plum, the palette was a disco-era fever dream. It was a time when a car could be Seamist Green or Jennifer Blue and nobody asked questions. You had options, and every single one of them was designed to look like a million bucks under a streetlamp.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your Caddy is wearing what GM called their "Magic-Mirror" acrylic lacquer. Back then, it was the gold standard for depth, but forty-plus years later, that mirror has likely turned into a chalkboard. This era of paint is notorious for "Oxidation"-that white, chalky haze that eats the shine and makes Sovereign Gold Metallic look like old mustard. Because there's no modern clear coat to act as a sacrificial shield, the pigment itself is fighting the sun. If you see "checking" (those tiny little spider-web cracks in the finish), that's the lacquer drying out and losing its grip on the primer.

Restoration Tip

Here's the deal: single-stage paint is a living thing-it needs wax or it dies. If you're touching up a chip in Thyme Green or Edinburgh Green Metallic, you have to clear away the "dead skin" first. Use a light polishing compound to buff the oxidation off the surrounding area until the true color pops back. If you're working on one of the Firemist colors, don't panic if your buffing pad turns the color of the car; that's just the pigment coming off, and it's perfectly normal for this tech. Once you've applied your touch-up, seal the entire panel with a high-quality carnauba wax. Think of it like lotion for old leather-keep it fed, or it'll crack and fade before the next oil change.
