How to Find Your 1978 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1978 Cadillac Background Info

The 1978 Cadillac Vibe

In 1978, Cadillac wasn't just building cars; they were crafting mobile executive suites. Whether you were piloting a downsized Seville or the legendary Eldorado-a car with a hood so long you could host a board meeting on it-you were doing it in a cloud of chrome and velour. This was the year Cadillac leaned hard into the "Earth Tone" aesthetic. Our database tracks 21 distinct shades from this era, a rainbow of browns, golds, and greens that looked like they were pulled straight from the wallpaper of a high-end Vegas lounge. We're talking about colors like Basil Green Firemist, Western Saddle, and Autumn Haze. If the color didn't sound like something you'd find in a spice rack or a desert sunset, Cadillac didn't want it on the assembly line.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. Back in '78, your Caddy left the factory with a thick, luscious coat of acrylic lacquer. Unlike modern cars, there's no clear coat "shield" sitting on top-the color and the shine are one and the same. The good news? This paint has a depth and "glow" that modern robots can't replicate. The bad news? It's prone to Oxidation. If your Mediterranean Blue or Canyon Copper looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's "chalking." The sun has literally cooked the life out of the top layer of pigment. If you ignore it, the paint becomes porous, absorbs moisture, and starts a slow-motion suicide mission that ends in "crazing"-those tiny spiderweb cracks that no amount of buffing can fix.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a chip on a 45-year-old finish, remember: it needs wax or it dies. Before you even think about opening a bottle of touch-up paint, you have to find the "live" paint underneath the chalk. Use a fine-cut rubbing compound on a small area to strip away the oxidation until the color looks rich and wet again. If you apply paint over the "dusty" oxidized layer, it'll peel off faster than a cheap pinstripe. Once your repair is dry, keep that Cadillac under a heavy coat of high-quality carnauba wax. On these single-stage finishes, the wax acts as the sacrificial lamb, taking the UV hits so your Aztec Gold doesn't have to.
