How to Find Your 1979 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1979 Cadillac Background Info

The 1979 Cadillac Vibe

It's 1979. Disco is gasping its last breath, the Eldorado has officially "downsized," and Cadillac is still trying to prove it's the Standard of the World by offering enough shades of brown and gold to camouflage a fleet of yachts in the Mojave. With 24 colors in our database, it's clear that Cadillac didn't do "subtle." Whether you were rolling in a Fleetwood Brougham draped in Western Saddle Firemist Metallic or a Coupe de Ville in Basil Green Firemist, you weren't just driving a car-you were piloting a land-bound luxury liner. This was the peak of the "Firemist" era, where Cadillac stuffed so much metallic flake into the soup that the cars practically glowed under a streetlamp.

Paint Health Check

Here's the cold, hard truth from the spray booth: you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. Back then, "Clear Coat" was just a rumor from Europe. Your 1979 Caddy was sprayed with acrylic lacquer or dispersion enamel where the shine and the color lived in the same layer. If your Saxony Red looks more like a dusty brick or your Cerulean Blue has a white, chalky film, that's oxidation. The sun has literally cooked the oils out of the finish, leaving behind dead pigment. And don't freak out when you start buffing and your pads turn the color of the car-that's just the single-stage paint saying "hello." But beware: if you see "Firemist" in the color name, those heavy metallic flakes like to oxidize and "sink," making a simple spot-repair look like a patch of glitter if you don't match the spray technique perfectly.

Restoration Tip

In this era, the rule is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Single-stage paint is porous; it breathes, it drinks, and it dries out. Before you even think about picking up a spray gun for a touch-up, you need to "feed" the original finish with a high-quality polish to see what's actually left underneath the chalk. If you're repairing a chip, build your layers slowly to match that thick, old-school Detroit depth. Once you've got the color back, seal it like your life depends on it. Without a regular coat of wax to act as a sacrificial barrier, the atmosphere will go right back to eating your Pottery Gold for breakfast.
