How to Find Your 1981 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1981 Cadillac Background Info

The 1981 Cadillac Vibe

Welcome to 1981, where the hoods are long enough to land a Cessna and the velvet interiors are deep enough to lose your keys in. If you were driving a Cadillac this year-whether it was the crisp Seville, the massive Fleetwood, or the sleek Eldorado-you weren't just picking a car; you were picking a personality from a massive 25-color menu. This was the peak of "Executive Variety." Cadillac wasn't afraid of a little flair, offering everything from the regal Victoria Plum Metallic to the uniquely 80s Jadestone Metallic. We even have three different ways to describe a "Waxberry" finish, which tells you exactly how much effort went into making sure your Caddy didn't look like the neighbor's Buick.

Paint Health Check

You're looking at the tail end of the Single Stage Era. Back in '81, Cadillac was still laying down thick layers of acrylic lacquer and high-solids enamel. This paint has a "heart"-the color goes all the way through-but it's a living thing that breathes. The biggest threat to your Burnished Oak or Mulberry Gray isn't peeling or flaking; it's Oxidation. Without a protective barrier, the sun literally drinks the oils out of the finish, leaving behind a "chalky" white haze that makes your luxury land-yacht look like a chalkboard. If you see fine spiderweb cracks (what we call "lacquer checking"), that's the paint crying out because it's dried to the bone.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1981 iron: It needs wax or it dies. Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "bring it back" by buffing away the dead, oxidized top layer to reveal fresh pigment underneath-something you can't do with modern thin finishes. However, once you find that shine, you have to seal it. These old-school metallics, like Azure Blue or Sterling Silver, are hungry for protection. Feed the finish with a high-quality carnuba or a modern sealant twice a year. If you skip the wax, the environment will start eating your Pastel Waxberry for breakfast.
