How to Find Your 1982 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1982 Cadillac Background Info

The 1982 Cadillac Vibe

Welcome to 1982-the year Cadillac tried to convince us that "smaller" was the new "extravagant." Whether you were floating down the interstate in a DeVille or one of the "All Other Models" that defined the era's downsized luxury, you weren't just driving; you were making a statement in 24 shades of polyester-suit glory. We're talking about a palette that looked like a high-end desert sunset. With colors like Autumn Maple Metallic, Azure Blue, and the ever-classic Colonial Yellow, Cadillac wasn't afraid of a little pigment. If you're rocking Sable Black or White (Cotillion), you're holding onto the gold standard of Reagan-era prestige.

Paint Health Check

Now, listen close, because 1982 sits squarely in the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't have a clear plastic shell protecting your color; the shine and the pigment were one and the same. The legend says these old finishes are bulletproof, but the reality is they're temperamental. If your Caddy has been sitting out, that deep Dark (Twilight) Blue Metallic probably looks more like a dusty chalkboard right now. That's "Oxidation"-the slow, chalky death of your finish. The sun literally eats the oils out of the paint until it turns into a matte, flaky mess. If you don't feed this paint, it simply dies.

Restoration Tip

If you're looking to save that original 1982 shine, remember: It needs wax or it dies. For these older single-stage metallics like Nugget or Sterling Silver, do not go in with a heavy-duty modern compound right away. You'll pull the color right off the car and onto your pad. Start with a very fine polish or a dedicated glaze to bring the oils back to the surface. Once you've rubbed some life back into that Almond or Jade Gray, seal it immediately with a high-quality carnauba wax. You're not just making it pretty; you're creating a barrier against the air. Think of it as moisturizer for your metal-keep it sealed, or watch it turn back to chalk by next summer.
