How to Find Your 1983 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1983 Cadillac Background Info

The 1983 Cadillac Vibe

Nineteen-eighty-three was the year Cadillac was trying to prove that luxury didn't have to be a city block long, but they certainly didn't skim on the color chart. We've got 23 distinct shades in our vault for this year-an absolute buffet of "earth-tone elegance." Whether you're rolling in an Eldorado, a Coupe de Ville, or one of the big Fleetwood Broughams, you were likely draped in something like Autumn Maple Firemist or Woodland Haze Metallic. It was an era of deep velour, chrome accents, and enough metallic flake to make a disco ball jealous. With over twenty choices, Cadillac wasn't just selling a car; they were selling a living room on wheels that matched your favorite pipe tobacco or your library's leather chairs.

Paint Health Check

Being firmly in the Single Stage Era, your '83 Caddy isn't fighting the peeling clear coat issues of the 90s, but it has a different demon: Oxidation. Back then, the color and the protection were all mixed into one thick, luscious layer. It looks deep and rich when it's fresh, but give it forty years of sun and that finish starts to "chalk." If your Hatteras Blue or Antique Saddle Metallic looks like someone rubbed a blackboard eraser over it, that's the paint literally dying on the surface. These old enamels and lacquers lose their oils and turn into a matte, powdery ghost of their former selves.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1983 paint is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Because there's no separate clear layer to shield the pigment, the color is constantly exposed to oxygen and UV. If you've still got original paint, don't just jump to a heavy abrasive compound; you'll burn through that Loden Green faster than a Fleetwood burns gas. Use a dedicated paint cleaner or a very fine polish to take off the "dead" oxidized layer, then feed it. A high-quality carnauba wax acts like a life-support system, sealing those pores and keeping the oxygen out. Without a regular coat of wax, these single-stage metallics will turn into a permanent chalk-pit that no amount of wishing can fix.
