How to Find Your 1989 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1989 Cadillac Background Info

The 1989 Cadillac Vibe

In 1989, Cadillac was playing a high-stakes game of "International Man of Mystery." You had the Allante-with bodies literally flown in from Italy via 747-sitting in showrooms next to the unapologetically American Brougham. It was a year of digital dashes, soft leather, and a very specific kind of executive presence. While our database focuses on the two colors that truly defined the era-the crisp, iconic White and the deep, authoritative Black-don't let the short list fool you. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the 1980s power broker. If you weren't pulling up in a Tuxedo Black Fleetwood or a Cotillion White Deville, you weren't really arriving.

Paint Health Check

By 1989, we were firmly entrenched in the "Peeling Era." Manufacturers had made the jump to basecoat-and-clearcoat systems, but they hadn't quite perfected the chemistry of sticking them together. On a 1989 Caddy, the legend might be bulletproof, but the clear coat is likely auditioning for a part in a horror movie. We call it "Delamination"-that tragic moment when the clear layer decides it's had enough of the basecoat and starts flaking off like a bad sunburn. If your roof or trunk lid looks like it's losing its skin, you're seeing the classic failure of late-80s factory finishes where UV rays finally won the war against the clear's bond.

Restoration Tip

When dealing with a 1989 survivor, your biggest enemy isn't just a scratch-it's the edge of that scratch. Because this era is prone to delamination, a tiny rock chip is actually a gateway for moisture and air to get under the clear coat and start lifting it. The Fix: Seal every chip immediately. Use a fine-tipped applicator to fill the void, and make sure you slightly overlap the edges of the surrounding clear coat. This "locks down" the perimeter and prevents that small chip from turning into a dinner-plate-sized peel. If you catch it early, you can keep that factory shine from hitting the pavement.
