How to Find Your 1990 Cadillac's Color Code

Cadillac used many locations for paint codes, making them hard to find, often impossible. GM (parent company of Cadillac) did not standardize the plate location. Usually the code is in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise it may be elsewhere. The typical format is 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). There are two codes in one, and a U or L may precede for Upper or Lower. Two-tone examples: BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N.

1990 Cadillac Background Info

The 1990 Cadillac Vibe

By 1990, Cadillac was trying to prove it was still the "Standard of the World," and nothing screamed that louder than the Allante-an Italian-designed suit with a Detroit V8 heartbeat. Whether you were cruising in an Allante or one of the All Other Models like the Fleetwood or DeVille, the 1990 aesthetic was all about understated luxury. While the era toyed with funky metallics, we've focused our database on the two absolute survivors: Black and White. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the executive class. If your Caddy is still on the road today, chances are it's wearing one of these timeless finishes that outlasted the flashier trends of the decade.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. By 1990, the factory had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but they hadn't quite mastered the chemistry of making them stick together forever. If your Cadillac has been sitting in the sun, you're likely dealing with "delamination"-that's a fancy shop word for when the clear coat gives up the ghost and starts peeling off like a bad sunburn. It usually starts as a small, cloudy bubble or a tiny flake around the edges of the hood or roof. Once that clear lifts and exposes the base color beneath, the paint is defenseless against the elements. If you see "silvering" or "chalkiness" on the horizontal surfaces, your clear coat is waving the white flag.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a 1990 finish alive is "edge control." Because these clear coats are prone to lifting, a single rock chip is an invitation for moisture to get under the clear and start a peeling chain reaction. Seal every chip immediately. Don't wait for the weekend. Use a fine-tipped applicator to fill the chip and, most importantly, overlap the edge of the remaining clear coat slightly. This "locks down" the perimeter and prevents the wind and car washes from catching the lip and peeling it back further. Think of it like putting clear nail polish on a snag in a sweater-you're stopping the run before it ruins the whole garment.
